Spinach and Chickpea

Sauteed Spinach and Chickpea

I created this dish one day while trying to think of what to cook. I had spinach and I had a can of chickpeas and I thought, why not put the two together. Hence I give you Sauteed Spinach and Chickpea. Chickpeas are also called garbanzo beans.

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Total Time: 35 minutes

Yield: Serves 4


  • 2 Tsp oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 cup diced onions
  • 1 1/2 tsp grated ginger
  • 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes
  • 2 tsp chopped garlic
  • Minced hot pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 14 oz can chickpeas, drained, rinsed and drained again
  • 2 lbs spinach chopped
  • Salt to taste


  1. Heat oil in pan.

  2. Add cumin seeds and toast in oil. As soon as the seeds start to pop, add onions and ginger and saute until onions are translucent.

  3. Add tomatoes, garlic and pepper and continue to saute for 1 - 2 minutes.

  4. Add turmeric and saute for 30 seconds.

  5. Add salt to taste.

  6. Toss in chickpeas and stir, mixing with the aromatics. Cook together for 3 - 4 minutes.

  7. Add spinach, toss to mix and let cook until spinach is wilted. Remove from heat, taste for salt and adjust.

  8. Serve with rice or roti or any type of flat bread. This creation can also be tossed with freshly cooked pasta.
