Solomon Gundy is the name of a fish paste made with Smoked Herring. It is a fish paste made primarily in Jamaica and served often with rum drinks.

Served on crackers as an appetizer, this is a favorite Jamaican food export.

Prep Time: 6 minutes

Total Time: 6 minutes

Yield: 2 cups


  • 1 lb smoked herring fillets
  • 1 cup diced onions
  • Minced hot pepper to taste
  • 3 Tbsp apple cider vinegar (substitute with regular white vinegar)
  • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil


  1. Add herring fillets, onions and pepper to a food processor and pulse until the fish is pulverized.

  2. With the food processor still running, drizzle in vinegar and oil and let continue to whirl until it becomes a paste.

  3. Transfer to sterilized bottles or containers and refrigerate. Serve as a paste. 

  4. Add a tablespoon of Solomon Gundy to 1/4 cup butter and mix to make a compound butter.
