Native Caribbean Ingredients

By , About.com Guide

The Arawaks and Caribs, two native tribes, originally occupied the Spanish influenced islands of The Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Puerto Rico.

It’s thought the Caribs began the tradition of spicing food with chili peppers and the Arawaks were among the first to use barbecue techniques.

Much of the produce we enjoy today is native to the Caribbean. Crops raised by the natives included:

  • corn
  • yams
  • yucca
  • peanuts
  • guavas
  • pineapple
  • black-eyed peas
  • lima beans
  • All of these foods are prominent components in typical Latin Caribbean cuisine.
