Definition: Sugarcane is a grass originally from Southeast Asia. This is the plant from which sugar is made. Sugarcane was one of the early crops brought to the Americas by Spaniards and it became a major crop during colonial times and the slave trade.

Sugarcane can be consumed as freshly extracted juice or processed into molasses or refined sugar. Sugarcane is also used in rum production, allowing the Caribbean to produce the best rum brands in the world.
