Definition: Ackee is native to tropical West Africa in Cameroon. It was introduced to the Caribbean through the slave trade. Only the arils around the seeds are edible. The rest of the fruit and the seeds are poisonous. The fruit must be harvested only after it has opened naturally. It should be fresh and not overripe. Ackee fruit that is immature and overripe is also poisonous.
