Definition: Plantains are a close cousin of bananas. Plantains are bigger and be firmer than bananas lower in sugar content. Plantains are a staple food in the tropical regions of the world and can be eaten in any stage of ripeness. Early explorers most likely brought the plantain to the Caribbean islands. Plantain leaves can be used to wrap and cook food in or as a plate to serve food on.
