Plantains are a staple in the Latin Caribbean diet. They are prepared many different ways, but tostones is the quickest and easiest. It’s a perfect recipe for beginners. You can serve the tostones immediately while they’re warm as a side dish or as a snack with garlic dip.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 6 minutes

Total Time: 11 minutes

  • 2 green plantains
  • Oil for frying
  • Salt

  1. Heat the oil to 375 degrees.
  2. While the oil is heating up, peel the green plantains and then cut them into 3/4 inch slices.
  3. Fry the slices in the hot oil for 3 minutes. They should be a light golden color and semi-soft.
  4. Remove the plantain slices with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  5. Tip: Maintain the oil’s temperature.

  6. When the plantain slices are cool enough to handle (about 1 minute), smash them into flat rounds.
  7. Fry the rounds in the hot oil for 3 minutes. They will turn crisp and golden brown.
  8. Remove the tostones with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Salt to taste.
Serves: 3-4 people.

My tostones, Member foodiesleuth

I too make my tostones using the same method you used, but sometimes, if I have too many green plantain and I want to use them up before they ripen, I will peel, cut, fry the chunks and then flatten them. At this stage I will freeze and then store in freezer safe ziplock. Take out as many needed for a meal and thaw at room temp then do the last fry. Serve hot with mojo....YUM
